Gibson Accu Voice system..options, opinions etc.

I recently picked up a neglected, SJ 100 with the Accu Voice pickup system.

I got the guitar stabilized, and it plays well, but there is very little output from the pickup.
Am I right in assuming that this system is obsolent at best, and not worth having repaired, and if so what would you replace it with?

It's pretty invasive, a large " bridge of the Enterprise" eq panel on the upper side, and a double (1/4 inch and DIN Jack ) and a battery box surround the rear end pin. I can find very little about it on line.

As I dont gig much I'm actually tempted to have it removed and the holes covered, funky but probably no less attractive than it is now. But I'm open to suggestion
