My Guild acoustic has two big cracks in the sound board and I'm considering re-topping it.

Does anyone make pre-built sound boards with all the bracing and such installed?

It a D17 or D15, I don't recall, but it's a dreadnaught for sure.

I know Stew-Mac sells whole kits, maybe they've got an appropriate top with bracing they could hook you up with. They'd be my first call. I haven't checked a LMI catalog in forever, have you checked them?

a good luthier can repair it ... IMO, a re-top is absolutely last a resort ...

Yeah, I checked LMI and Stew Mac. I might call LMI and see if they'd be willing to sell a seperate top.

The reason I want to change the top is that it's mahogany and I'm not crazy about it. The other reason is, the neck is pretty narrow on this guitar and I'm not aprticularly found of it either.

I have been building scratch-built electrics since the early 80's but never tried an acoustic. Re-topping this one will give me a chance to re-set the neck and open it up to see what all goes on inside there and hopefully end up with a sweet sounding spruce top guitar.

If I botch the whole thing I'll just throw it away.

Telenator, if you decide to go ahead with the re-top, IMO, it would make a very interesting thread and you would probably get you some helpful pointers ... Good Luck !!!

I don't know where you will get a prefinished top but LMII will sell you the bookmatched top wood, a dreadnaught-sized pre-shaped brace kit, a bridge plate and bridge, and just about anything else you might need.

If it was me, I'd be tempted to carefully remove the top that's on there now and replicate it in new wood.
