Feeding 2nd ball end down string?

ANyone do this? Ive had two people now tell me to take the ball end off of my old string and feed it down the new string, so its sitting on the first ball end. How would i be able to put the bridge pin on if i did this?
Thanks,
Tyler

Hey Tyler - Did they say why you should do this? First I've heard of it.

It's an old trick. If you get a string buzz you could try it. I've done it on my old D-28, which some years ago developed an annoying buzz on the B-string. Due to the faulty neck angle I had to lower the bridge saddle so that I could still have acceptable action hight. Then the part of the string where it is "wrapped around itself" came too close to the bridge saddle.

Tried it and presto - no buzz anymore. It's about time for a neck reset now, but untill then I'll use "the extra ball end" trick.

When changing strings always make sure that the ball end of the string is sitting properly in the string slot of the bridge plate (the reinforcement plate under the top).

Mind you, you shouldn't have to do this every time you change strings on a "healthy" guitar without any buzz.

In theory, you will get a flatter surface and more mass to affect the bridge plate and making the top vibrate - but in practice I doubt if you can actually hear the difference.

I'll only be 60 years old next birthday Tyler, but I hope you believe what I just said nevertheless ...

It's a trick that works if the bridge plate (inside the guitar, where the ball ends normally rest) has been chewed up. In that case the string winding would be visible coming out of the bridge slot. Not necessary if the bridge plate is okay.
