MF Stupid Deal - Silver Creek T-170

I had told myself that I wouldn't buy any Chinese guitars, but this was too hard to pass up. Today's "Stupid Deal of the Day" is a Silver Creek T-170 guitar for $199. I remembered the reviews posted here a while back for the T-160:

http://www.tdpri.com/forum/acoustic-...view-long.html

http://www.tdpri.com/forum/acoustic-...-160-pics.html

So, I ordered one, along with a case and some strings. I can't wait to see how this one plays and sounds.

Post some pictures and a review.

I play OOO's.

I love OOO's.

It was tempting; solid rosewood. I would love to hear all about it when you get it.

Thanks,

John

I love 000's too. Wish I had the funds to get that bad boy. Don't tell me how good it is. I might go rob someone. LOL

I just ordered one too. Don't *really* need another 000 acoustic, but I just can't pass up a $200/free shipping/solid rosewood/spruce/24.9 scale/poor man's 00028EC

I've read that it's a fairly chunky soft V neck; I hope so... May need some setup too (some are good to go, some not it seems), but that's fine.

If you are beating yourself up for not ordering a T-170 on Friday when they were $199, today's stupid deal is a T-160 for $199:

I ordered later on Friday than you (about 10PM), but I only ordered the guitar. The case and strings you added probably slowed down processing. You'll probably have a delivery date by tomorrow morning. My delivery date showed up about mid morning today.

I bought one of the rosewoods last year and sent it back. It sounded good for the money, but I just couldn't deal with the baseball bat neck. It just wasn't fun to play.

That's what I prefer; a chunky neck. To each his own.

Can't play the skinny necks. Hands cramp up.

I'm hoping for a big, fat neck too.

WOW! I am impressed!

$200? You've got to be kidding me!

A VERY pronounced V neck. Not too chunky at all, like the old pre-war Martins, and fits my palm perfectly. Very nice construction IMHO. Very neat work inside (no excess glue to be seen), and no flaws in the finish that I can see. Very nice grain all around, and has a bit of "bear claw" on the spruce top's lower bouts, which adds some nice character and a bit of waviness, when viewed at the right angle. Action is a tad high, but I'm going to restring it today with EB Earthwood 80/20 bronze alloy 10-52 (plain G, "rock and blues"), tighten the truss just a hair, sand a bit off the saddle, and see how it goes. It is a bone nut and bone compensated saddle (or perhaps nubone?).

Factory fresh, and very well-packed (and UPS took great care of it). I was afraid these may be rejects at that price. It's never been opened, that I can tell.

It's here!

Mine is exactly like tap4154's description. I would have preferred a chunky U or C neck, but I'm not complaining about the V. The action is a tad high, the truss rod needs some adjustment and the nut needs a little attention, but these are all minor issues that I'm happy to take care of. Overall, it's a great deal. And the most important thing, it sounds very good. I don't have anything to A-B it with, but I'm more than happy with the tone.

Cotecj, I initially thought I may have a minor nut issue or raised fret, as the high E was making a funny noise open, and when fretted in some places.

However when I loosened the strings to change them, this is what I saw:

Kinks all along all the strings, like they'd been crumpled up before being installed at the factory. Once I put the new set on, it all cleared up. Also sanded off the bottom of the saddle a bit and tightened the truss a half turn. Action is much better now.

BTW, the stock strings were a bit tight/pinched in the nut slots, but the 10-52 set fits perfectly.

You know, my strings were the same way! I just cleaned the nut up and put on a set of 10-47 D'Addarios. I think the truss rod must be a double-acting rod, because I had to loosen it with the new 10's on, and it got to a point where it had no tension, and I turned it a little more, and it started to build tension again, and the neck relief increased. Anyway, the relief and action are perfect now.

I have a T-170 and a T-160. I bought these a few months ago. 1st the T-170 for 249. I liked it so much, I then bought the 160. Both are excellent guitars at an unbelieveable price.I have Martins, Gibsons, and have owned quite a few 400. to 700. Asian imports, ( Epiphones, Masterbilts, Guild Gad, etc. ). My Silver Creeks are every bit as good or better than the other imports. Probably will need to be set up a bit, but I've found that most new guitars do anyway. I enjoy both of mine very much. My opinion is, these are a no brainer.

Sorry to break the news TNO, but they don't come with a case. Cotecj added the Silver Creek case to his order.

How do the T-170 and T-160 compare? I would have bought the T-160 if the T-170 hadn't been the stupid deal of the day at MF. Is the mahogany warmer or more "woody" sounding, as people tend to describe mahogany vs rosewood?

I'd say so. The guitars are identical except for the rosewood/mahogony and the inlays on the headstock. I would say the 160 has the typical mahogony/ spruce tone you would expect. Hard to put into words for me, but the 160 is definately a great little guitar. It's not as '' warm '' sounding as an all mahogony guitar.

Just picked up a T-170 Rosewood from Musicians Friend for $99.00.

That's $199 out the door (phone orders with their secret code) with a $100 rebate through 10/31/09.

The years biggest no brainer and my new slide acoustic.

How did you get it for that price, it's listed at $399 online?

I called twice and they both had no idea of what I was talking about when I mention promo 910T . They kept saying the price was $299 on their screen. After a little prodding, whining like a little girl actually, I managed to get it down to $199 plus the $100 rebate. banana010.gif

Glad you got it. The promo code is from a flyer I got with a recent order. I got my T-170 on a "Stupid Deal of the Day" for $199. Wish I had a $100 rebate too! What's the deal on the rebate?

I went for the T160 myself. Funny thing is on their screen the prices were T160 $299 and T170 $399 less rebate. My screen showed $199 and $299 less rebate. So I guess the prices changed just as I placed the order. Here's the rebate http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbas...109_103109.pdf. It's only good for Oct. Oh, and thanks for the tip.

I received a T-160 the other day. Seems like a decent guitar for the money. It's a bit tough for me to properly evaluate because I just got a Collings about 3 weeks ago. I bought this T160 for my daughter and hope she puts some time into it. Got mine for $179. The T170 was $199. Also got 10% off for saying "JBL" when they answered the phone. There was some kind of special going on. So $162 plus $100 rebate. So for $62 could I go wrong?

I notice that their homepage now says to say "AXE". That's where the JBL was the other day. There's still a few hours to snag one of these!
