I'm more of a Gibson guy but had several Martins, including a '90s D-18 vintage series thing. I also owned an '89 HD-35 that was my number one for 13 years. I thought they were very well done. Don't know of any problems in that time frame. Only Martins I came across that were not pretty darned nice were some early '70s ones, and some of those can also be great guitars.
Maybe go over to UMGF (unofficial martin guitar forum) and look around? Many Martin players there w. much knowledge. Not sure you can do a search there unless you join and that can take a little while, but maybe worth a look? And if the price is right, go look at the darned thing if ya can swing it. |

I had a 94 HD28 & it was great! By now, a guitar of that era has opened up and aged about all its gonna, and should still be new enough to be free of issues (hopefully). Now I play a more recent D28(2008), & I prefer the tightness of the D28 vs the boomy nature of the HD. If you have the duckets I say do it & don't look back! Post pics!

I have a '93 HD-28 2R. (the 2R part baisicly means a slighly larger sound hole and herringbone inlay around the soundhole instead of the standard rosette) From what i've been told about that era of HD/D-28's , is that '94 was the last year before they moved the "X" bracing back to what it is now, to tighten up the low-end and concentrate on the mids, as opposed to a more traditional boomy "Bluegrass Canon" as they are commonly know as. I was also told that the bracing of HD/D-28's were braced the same from 1934 up to 1994. (Before the change). Not sure if this is all 100% correct. But, the forward shifted bracing of my '93, being that it was more like a real vintage d-28, compared to the nowaday's bracing, was a big tone and authenticity point that particially sold me on this particular guitar. That and the guitar sounded so good, my head almost exploded upon first strum. I unfortunately have not seen that era's level of craftsmanship, materials and overall sound and construction quality in the nowadays HD/D-28's. I say BUY IT!!!!
