How do you pronounce the "Takamine" name?

Is it tack-uh-meanie?

Is it tack-uh-mine (as in "that belongs to me; it's mine")?

Something else???

Thanks. I had never really heard it said out loud before the other day. "Meanie" is the way the guy said it - guess I've been hearing it wrong in my head since I first read about them (I always read it as "mine").

Taw Kaw Me Nay is I believe roughly correct for Japanese pronunciation, with each syllable accented the same and not drawn out--all eighth notes.

Tack uh meanie would be a more natural way to say it speaking English, and I think is the accepted form.

As long as you don't say 'Take Mine' to which most people would quickly respond "Thank you very much" and walk off with your guitar you'll be fine!!

??

Nope. Here it is...straight from my Japanese wife...

Ta (tah) as in ta-ta for now!
Ka (kah) as in the snake from the Jungle Book.
Mi (me) as in, "how ya like me now!"
Ne (ne) as in the first sound in nevermind. It's a shorter sound than "nay"

thanks, thats precisely what I said, I just broke it down for English speakers since they abbreviate their guitar as a Tak and not Taka...also married to a Japanese woman and am in Japan and have asked my students this question. I know about ta-ti- tu- te- to...ka- ki- ku- ke- ko...ma-mi- mu- me- mo...na-ni-nu-ne-no, and if more English speakers knew this they`d stop massacreing Nikon, karate and karaoke. Same goes for Japanese people who speak English...I keep making the same corrections year after year...shouldn`t complain since it keeps me employed and perhaps now that the gov`t has finally caught on that junior high is too late to start teaching a second language, maybe the kids learning English in elementary school will acquire better habits by the time they reach university...and I speak from experience since I grew up in a bilingual household and spoke both French and English before I started school, as did my bother and sisters...so I speak to my brother in laws kids in English every week, and they have learned quite a bit so hopefully they`ll have a good foundation for when they start English in school.

OK, now how about "Ibanez?" I always hear that pronounced "EYE-buh-nezz," with the emphasis on the "eye." But I have one friend who says "ibba-nezz." That same guy always says "rih-VERB," where other folks say "REE-verb."

P.S. I'm having trouble with Linux and Ubuntu, too...

P.P.S. I saw a movie once with a character named "ih-BAN-ezz," so I guess that's also a possibility.

Not exactly. Maybe what you meant. Your original post had a different "a" sound.

That sounds like I thought it would. I am not Japanese, but I did grow up in Hawaii with lots of Japanese people around and have watched a lot of anime. (I have been corrected on karate and karaoke before.)

Ibanez is a hispanic surname. There is a "squiggly wave" accent above the letter n. Along with the phonetic pronounciation, Ibanez is pronounced: "ee-bahn-yez".

Either your teacher had a speech impedement...(j/k).
Actually, some countries in Latin America have the same thing with the "S" or "Z"...pronouncing it with somewhat of a lisp.
I can't remember it, exactly, of whether it was a tribute to the Queen of Spain (Isabella?)...or something like that, that royalty wanted their people to talk that way.
