Gibson...Mind readers?

I have a J-45 in Rosewood that I dearly love, but over the last year I started thinking about getting a Mahoghany acoustic to compliment it.

I appreciate the Sunburst, the fat 24.75 neck of my J45 and wanted these two appointments but all other things being different.

So I go to the Gibby site and start looking around, and there it was, the Gibson Southern Jumbo. Although these guitars look the same to the novice, Gibson has designed them very differently.

My j-45 is Rosewood, ebony neck, with a sound hole pickup, dot inlays.
The Southern Jumbo is Mahoghany, rosewood neck, bridge pick up, and parallelogram inlays.

It is almost like they were reading my mind.

Historically there was absolutely no difference between the J-45 and SJ other than the SJ had more bling. (although a few batches of roswood back and side SJs were made early on).

Gibson ain't mind readers - they simply produce as many variations on particular model as they can. A J-45 for every possible taste. They may not be much on tradition but they know their marketing.

I'd go somewhere completely different, for a 2nd Mahog guitar, short scale, big neck. I'll always have a Gibson Rosewood in the stable but for some reason think Martin does a better job with Hog.

You can find new ones at 40% off list.

From what I'm hearing, genuine hog will be hard to get in a few years. These are short scale hogs with fat necks that are worth a try. That 12 fret slothead ordered in amberburst would be my pick.

I love my 00-18V. It's more versatile than I ever expected. It's quite good at strumming or finger picking, playing soft or playing loud. It is also really nice because it gets the mahogany tone but it's not extreme like some guitars, and not too much nasal tone that some mahogany guitars have. It also seems like there are few dud copies based on it's popularity on the UMGF and other acoustic boards.

Basically Martin has made 00-18 variants for since the late 1800s, and I think they got it down. It's my acoustic jack of all trades and guitar comfort food.

A guitar shop cruising friend of mine has an 000-18GE that's also superb. Our observation after checking out lots of mahogany guitars is they can and do have a bright tone, woody tone and bell-like tone and ours don't have too much of one characteristic or extremes yet they can really belt out the tone for not so big guitars.

Here's Mine!

I ordered my OM18V in Amberburst, since Martins regular bursts have too much black on the edges for my tastes. This one is long scale, keeps up with just about any dred out there. This model was discontinued earlier this year, mine is one of the last of 'em.

Yes, that is it...their marketing, and of course, a good product

I agree Zomby, The J45 true vintage is awesome, I like it better than the modern classic, would be for sure worth the extra $$ to me. The Woody Guthrie SJ is great also.

Nothing against Gibsons or Martins, but you might want to try out a Guild D25; less cost ,beautiful tone and fantastic mahogany looks.

Like Tele's, I think is just good to find one you can bond with, which I did. I really didn't have the coin for a vintage acoustic (or tele for that matter), and they weren't making the True Vintage 5 years ago when I bought my Rosy J-45.

My price point was 2k...not 3k either.

Hightower, I totally agree with you on the fantastic Mahogany looks. Well, maybe if she spent some time in a tanning booth she'd really have that Mahogany look going. The guitar looks great too!

Yeh well, New Yorkers never see the daylight (as I remember in some old Nils Lofgren song). That D-25 actually looks like the red edition, mine is a beautiful warm brown mahogany; She is a sexythang and should get some respect from you Jerseyites and NYC crowd; I may have to make the 6 hour drive up there to see her.

Who is this young lady? Does she do a lot of gigs? I might have to travel to one just to hear that red-top Guild in action and admire it's looks.

Jessica Charlotte Poland aka Charlotte Sometimes.

She played on the "warped" tour this past summer, and as I understand it she and the band were kinda "sloppy" in a live performance; which led Geffen to demand they put out the $$$ to continue touring. She was scheduled to play the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA in December ; just her and the lead player, but was canceled because poor Geffen Records would not front the dough. I think she still plays around NYC, so I am seriously thinking of making the long I-95 journey to see her.
In the studio, she is a force to be reckoned with!!!!

Well, I'm happy to learn I have SOMETHING in common with the younger generation... I'm a Guild guy from way back (D30 and D50). Nice to know that I ever bump into this Jessica Charlotte, we'll have something to chat about!
