Utlimately the fate of every steel string acoustic guitar (and some electrics) is that the tension of the strings will take its toll on the neck, pulling it upwards and increasing the action to the point of unplayability. You can adjust the bridge saddle, but only so much, and then the guitar needs major surgery to remove the typically glued in neck and to adjust and re-attach it at a more favourable angle.

There is no set interval; it's a function of time, the conditions the guitar has been exposed to, the characteristics of the wood the guitar was made from, etc, etc. It's unusual to see guitars less than 20 years old needing a neck reset, but not too unusual after that.

These two Santa Cruz Guitar Company models. The one on the left is my friend, Kenny's, 000-NB Rising Fawn (NB = Norman Blake). The one on the right is my "1942 Bluegrass D". Just last night we played "Last Train From Poor Valley" from the first Blake & Rice CD.

Taylor Grand Concert . It is the old 12 size. Mine is the 30th anniversary with shorter scale, open headstock, cedar and mahogany. My Dana B is for sale on the forum. It's a great guitar but it's not me.

String tension is not the most likely culprit.

The most common problem on an acoustic is the back flattening out which rotates the neck block causing the neck to tilt upwards.

But yeah, pretty much most acoustics will need a neck reset after some 25 years.

I think I'm deciding to pass on my Showdown to a friend's 10 yo son who really wants to learn (he keeps stealing his sister's pink acoustic--shows he's interested!). I pulled out my Martin D-18S last night. I don't think I'm putting it back up for a long time.

Recording King RO-227. Made in China, yes, but a lovely design (based on the Martin OOO) and well-built guitar that plays like a dream. Lovely on fingerstyle blues, but it'll take a flatpick well, too. Check them out here: http://www.recordingking.com/guitars_ro227.html

Classical guitars that I build myself. My go-to guitar right now is a white cedar/lacewood Torres SE type.

Fender DG-100! Absolute killer deal for the price. I love it. I will admit I haven't played it much until today(I've been stuck on my tele). But every time I play it, I smile. Fun guitar with great action and tone.

I play my Taylor 614CE at 2 church services each week as well as 1 rehearsal but around the house and jamming with friends I usually drag my Guild GAD50.

Cheapo EKO ranger 6-C in black. Got as a beater guitar to keep at my office to play something after lunch, paied just € 65 (gig bag included) and fell in love with it after a little fret dressing and setting up. Now it stays home, almost pampered... the neck is SO sweet, expecially for an acoustic dreanought. It's my acoustic blues machine now. The sound isn't THAT deep (I guess is basswood, with a tinted maple fingerboard that look nicely like rosewood), but it works well indeed.

I've got an old (1981), almost historical EKO Ranger 6(EL(ectrified), but it's got too a big & wide neck, it's a big beast really uneasy to tame. Anyway, after 28 years it's still perfect, like brand new.

In my band I play an acoustic in about 1/2 the songs. My gig ax is a Blueridge BG-160. I love the feel, playability, look, and most importantly the tone, from this instrument.

I use my Guild GAD Jf-48 for fingerpicking and an Epi-MAsterbilt AJ-500MNA for strumming. But I picked up a Taylor the other day and she's been hogging all my time.
