Anyone else a huge fan of David Rawlings?

One of the most innovative players around in my mind. Love him and Gillian's work.

Either way, Gruhn just got an Epiphone Olympic just like David's in. I thought it was interesting that they mention Rawling's in the instrument's description too! Check it out.

Yman, I really appreciate David's work also but....

sometimes I don't think he's given his due! I've seen a lot of show marquees, schedules, or listings for TV shows which just say Gillian Welch. I think it should always read Gillian Welch "AND" David Rawlings as he's just as much responsible for "their" great sound as she is.......He's one of the tastiest players out there and I love the tone of his old Epi archtop......JH in Va.

The Gillian Welch collective (Welch has stated on more than one occasion that she and Rawlings are "a two-piece band called Gillian Welch") is absolutely brilliant. Their ability to craft new songs that sound old and to make old songs sound fresh is unequaled.

George Gruhn's mention of Rawlings is undoubtedly due to the fact that if not for him this would be a $750-ish guitar. If I thought there was the slightest possibility that I could draw the same tone out of this little archtop that Dave pulls out of his I'd be on the phone with someone at Gruhn's right now.

Anyone know..........

what vintage David's guitar is?...........

Also, it's off the topic of this guitar but does anyone know if they're romatically linked? I've often wondered since they travel all over the country together, it'd save on hotel rooms for one thing.......JH in Va.

...and David has cautioned that there's no magic in most of those old Epis. His guitar has had a lot of work done on it.

I'm a big fan. After seeing him and G.W. in concert I wished I could head a film crew to follow them around on tour and make a documentary.

I'm lucky enough to call Dave and Gil friends of mine (although I havent hung out w/ them in a long while)

Yes - they are "romantically linked"

Yes - Dave makes EVERYTHING sound great. I think he must love that Epi but I would guess the magic is in his HANDS. That old J-50 of Gil's is an awesome guitar though !!

They also appear as a lil band where Gil plays bass and Dave is more of the front man - they used to be called The Esquires. I think they call themselves the "Dave Rawlings experience" or something now. I think they play Largo - in L.A. - tonite or tommorrow

Yeah its definitely in dave's hands, but you can't argue that the Epi looks cool! I feel like its a mixed bag with alot of the older archtops.

And i think they play as the David Rawlings Machine occasionally. There are some great youtube videos of them as both Gillian Welch and The David Rawlings Machine.

On a similar note, I think David acquired an Esquire in Nashville; that might be the source of the name The Esquires...

I think this is the esquire in action, and an amazing song too

I think the Olympic is a '34. I've heard him say he likes it because the tone is very even no matter what part of the neck he's playing.

The thing I like about DR's playing is that it is so mandolinistic [to invent a word]. Lots of melodic runs and little melodies that compliment the song.

Dave certainly has "it".
Love to see a solo CD someday.
