Recommendation for nylon strings?
My daughter has a nylon string guitar that a friend gave her. She just broke a string, so I want to replace the set. I have never bought nylon strings before. It looks like they tie to the bridge; I assume that they are all like that.
Any recommendation as to brand, gauge, etc.? Thank you!

Earnie Ball makes some with ball ends, as easy to install as steel strings...but sometimes I tie several more knots in the end under the ball...they just slide up...`cause the high strings have popped through the ends before.

If she's playing classical stuff, I'd highly recommend any of the Augustine line, which are all tie ons. If you buy "folk" strings, many of them will have ball ends. With the wound strings, they'll have ball ends like you find on steel or bronze strings. For the plain nylon, they'll have the knots and often a little bead to hold the knot against the bridge. As sneakyjapan said, I usually tie an extra knot in the high E, since I have had them pull through. I've not had that issue with the B or G. If I were you, I'd just buy a ball-end folk set and make life easy. For strumming chords, she'll never get the benefit from a $30 set of tie-ons.

She's just strumming chords. What do you think of these?
Or these, which appear to be sold only as single strings, and which aren't available right now anyway: Thanks again!

Nope, do not use those D'Addarios you linked, they're for steel-string acoustics. They're very similar to Silk and Steels from Martin. You need something like this:
These are what I've used for a long time, and I love 'em. I especially like the look of the black nylon. http://www.activemusician.com/item--MC.830-3SETS (I don't know squat about that company, I just googled the strings and they were the first hit) |
