Rigging up an acoustic pickup

Alright I have an idea to rig up an acoustic pickup and I was just wondering if this would work. The pickup I've got has the amp cable built into it. Its a huge pain in the butt to put the pickup in every time I want to electrify to my acoustic. So, would it work if I sever the connection from the 1/4" plug and run that to a standard guitar input jack and then ground the jack on the back of the pickup? I would then drill a hole in the guitar and install the input jack there.

No need to run a separate ground wire...the shield wire IS the ground. Just solder to a regular 1/4" jack..drill a hole in the body and secure with the enclosed nut. You more than likely will need an external preamp, though.
