Any ideas...guitar storage racks or stands

I am going to move out of my mancave in the basement and "takeover" my daughetr's bedroom when she gets married and moves out in August. I currently have about 8-10 guitars both acoustic and electric that I have cased and stacked in a couple of spots around the house. My plan is to create a music room for practice, jamming and a bit of recording. I would very much like to keep most of the guitars very handy if not uncased in some form of rack or stand. the caveat from Mrs. mojito is that I not use some kind of PVC do it yourself stand or an industrial looking rack. I was wondering what some of you in a similar situation are using if anything.

Any ideas, suggestions or designs please?

I use String Swings and hang them on the wall.

I use String Swings also. The wood one looks good, and I haven't had any problems with them. Good luck finding something you and the mrs. can agree on.

Well she is moving 4 states away and marrying an Air Force guy and continuing her teaching career. Her future husband has known me and my daughter since he was about 14 years old. He knows that if he makes my baby cry I make him cry. :-).

I have thought about wall hanging a couple of teh guitars but then I am still taking up extra room with the empty cases. I also would choose to keep some of them in cases just for securty and keeping them cleaner. The room only has one wall that I can use that is not exterior so hanging up 8 guitars isn't a viable option.

Keep th eideas coming though, iam flexible to a degree.

There are three and five guitar stands available, I have a triple job that works well for the three that I reach for most often. Beginning to think that the Fenders and the 1 prettiest guitar can stay out where they can be grabbed and played and appreciated, and the rest should be in their cases. Oh, well, wait a minute I forgot the two that are already on wall hangers. Still, you wind up with some in their cases.

Good point about the outside wall, I think it's Martin that warns against hanging a guitar on a wall where one side is heated more than the other (taking it a bit too far, though), but after all you do need a spare place to hang up the son-in-law.

Keep mine hangin on the wall for easy access .. guits..basses..mandolins..banjos..even a fiddle hangin up there.I even have straps hanging. No mounted Son in Law heads yet..too bad I bet It would really bring the room together nicely.

I have hung guitars on an outside wall for years with no problem - but it's a 2x6 wall and no radiators underneath. I keep a thermometer and hygrometer on the wall and I know what the temp/humidity is at all times.

The 2 exterior walls are pretty well exposed to hard weather in the winter so there's a good bit of differerence also my supply air ducts are on the exterior wall so I'd rather not have the guitars bathed in hard airflow either.

I can hang possibly a few but I still need to work out some kind of case management for the empty cases as well as those that hold guitars.

I use the style racks pictured below. I don't think they will fit a guitar case though. I got these racks from eBay but you can get them at any music store I'm sure.

This helped with the airflow on the wall where there is heat.



I was lucky to build a closet just for guitar cases. Of course when I built the house (with the Man-cave part of the plan), I only had 8 guitars... now I've got 12... the closet is getting full!

Forced hot air heat? And guitars?? Acoustic guitars??? Save some money with cheap wall hangers and invest instead in a humidification system for the room. Or keep them all in cases with humidifiers in them.

There is no warm air blowing anywhere near the guitars and I do have a whole house humidifier attached to the heating system, as well as a large one-room unit in the music room. It's worked real well for the past few years.

I keep a temp/humidity meter right on the wall with the guitars and it stays around 45% humid and temp stays around 65 degrees.

When I was young and stupid - compared to old and stupid,l I parked my Gibson Acoustic right in front of a baseboard radiator during the winter. My poor daughter was standing nearby when the bridge popped off and she thought she did it, and that I'd get mad at her... poor kid...

The ones on the wall are the ones you will grab and play.
Some of the floor stands for two and more guitars are NOT stable and make expensive noises when they fall over.

for the ones you play most, wall hangers..and the ones you dont ..keep in the case. I keep mine all on the wall but its very stable temp and humidity...and I keep one stand out next to my desk ..for quick set down..reset track..pick up kind of stuff..just be sure to dust any hanging guits that you dont play often..My advice is, if the mancave is the same size or larger, and dry..stay in it..I love basements. I dont have a garage OR a basement OR a spare room...but my wife let me set up in our bedroom..she sleeps in there and thats about it..deal was I have no influence on the rest of the house decor

The new room will be much larger than the little bit of space I have in the cellar, that's really what it is not a basement. I think I will do just as mentioned above. I'll get a nice rack to hold the cased guitars, keep a few on the wall and a couple in immediate reach on my Hercules stands. I have no issues with small children or rambunctious pets to worry about and teh Hercules stands work great.

The trouble with using any type of stand or rack system is that it's too easy for "walking boss" to take inventory. Any addition to the family immediately draws attention. No, I couldn't get away with that!
