Maybe he trims the baseplates? Look at the Gotoh SES510 tuners at the bottom of the picture you have... that's the sort of thing you want for a Tele. I'm sure a good luthier could modify the baseplates on Waverlys to fit like that, although it'd void the warranty (like we've ever seen a broken Waverly).

A while back, I played a 1920s Martin with original Waverly tuners. They were still smooth and tight. Then again, my 1950s Klusons tune pretty well, too. But my 1970s Grovers are all falling apart.

Oh, and my Running Dog acoustic has the nickel Waverlys with black pearl knobs. They are absolutely the best-looking tuners I've ever seen. I just wish I could find a pickguard where the pearl looked so good.
