And I don't know if this qualifies as a solo, or just an instrumental break, but the studio version of KISS's "Cold Gin" is laughable.

Dang, you beat me to the Foreigner thing. I remember long before I evr started playing guitar I'd hear that and just be appalled by it. Pretty much everything by Foreigner makes me laugh now...to me they epitomize the heyday of 70s crotch-rock, singer with his shirt open to his navel, guitar player with a 12 pound Les Paul down at his kneecaps, gold jewelry, the whole bit.
As for KISS, well, they were like a bar band, pretty much. But bar band players (hell, that's me) can be pretty inspired sometimes, and all I ever heard out of ol' Ace was some tired Clapton/Page rehash stuff that was b-o-r-i-n-g as hell. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of KISS stuff but the solos don't even serve the songs well. Oh well, at least Ace never claimed to be some sort of guitar gawd.
