Your '83 is a vintage guitar -- please don't convert. If you decide you need to have a string through just sell your toploader to someone who appreciates it and buy a string thorugh.
Jeff Buckley used an '83-'84 toploader and they are definitely becoming collectable
Other notable toploader users include Jimmy Page and Jim Campilongo
