My first real guitar was a classical. At the time, my fingers couldn't handle my brother's steel string guitar, so I went with nylon for the first year.
I've found a simple music stand with a light to be a very underrated tool if you have to read a lot of sheet music.
Another gift idea, if the D-28 is sitting idle, give him a set of coated steel strings to try on it. They have a silky feeling to them. Better yet, offer to borrow the Martin so it gets used - there's nothing better to improve the tone of an acoustic!
