I've only had two Martins, but I figured out that dreadnoughts are too big for me. I had a D-21 for a couple of weeks in the 60's, and down-sized to a 00-18E. I think I probably sold the D-21 for less than $200, and I know that I paid $100 for the 00-18E that I still have. Bad move financially, but I'm sure that the 00-18E gets played more than the D-21 would have, just because of the size. The 00-18E feels great, sounds great, and fits me well.
I do wish that I owned a vintage rosewood-bodied Martin, though.
