I think that's what I'll do. I ended up doing a progression like that in reverse for country stuff. I save some time and go straight to the roots and take it from there.
I did grab a video "Learn Rockabilly Guitar with Six Masters" although I've not had time to check it out much. I think I'll hold off until I can start tuning my ear to some of the originals you and others have mentioned though.
People have mentioned Elvis, and I'd never considered that. My only image as him was from when I was a youngster and is of the bloated, sequined Elvis. I'd never gone backwards from that, although it sounds like I should. Not to slam him really, just recalling my impression of him as a kid. Funny thing is I remember the exact moment in time when someone told me he was dead, even though I was a grade schooler. What struck me was the impact it had on the adults around me... I just thought he was an old guy in a funny suit. Anyway, I digress ;)
