Both types of guitars can do the job if you are a good player. While I like fancy guitars like the Gibson Citation, L-5, PRS Dragon, D'Angelicos, and a D-45, the best recorded music I enjoy is done with regular, easy to afford instruments.
I am sure Keef would have sounded the same had he been able to get a one of a kind, gold plated Fender Custom Shop Telecaster with inlaid precious stones and used that every time he recorded with a tele, but I like his rather ordinary and fugly black '70s tele.
