I think it's what you were raised on. I grew up with motown, funk, bluesy rock and rockabilly blaring in the background, so bluesy jazz and bebop is not outside my comfort zone.
But, I cannot stand progressive jazz, progressive rock... progressive anything. It always sounds too technically proficient and rigid for mine. I prefer music with a looseness and vibe rather than a perfect execution of scales.
