Maine is trout pond heaven. We are blessed with hundreds of ponds containing brook trout, many with nothing but brook trout, and many of these have never been stocked. Typically, you want to be on the water at daybreak or dusk, and I prefer the dusk option. It's very common for a hatch to occur as the sun is setting, and it doesn't get any better than casting dry flies to rises. Right about now is when many ponds have their annual hatches of a giant mayfly technically referred to as Hexagenia limabata, but usually called Hexes or Green Drakes around here. This hatch is famous for bringing up larger fish, but it usually only provides a very short window of activity right around dusk. Many folks actually plan annual vacations around this hatch.
