My students talk more about Mastadon and Skrillex than pretty boys. Aphex Twin had a huge reputation a few years ago. So I think that there are artists that younger folks regard highly that are more than good looking, marketable types. My students have pretty strong tastes and see themselves as way, way different from college jocks and susie cheerleaders. I don't think that guitar playing per se is as interesting to younger listeners than it was for us.
Another question: is there room in the blues-based electric guitar universe for more innovative and game-changing musicians? Maybe the genre is saturated, not something that I am personally happy about, but might very well be the case.
