Both my dogs do this, the younger one takes more time. My take is that you can't just do your business just anywhere, it takes a lot of calculating to find the optimum point in the lawn. You have to take into account the angle from the edge of the property lines, the topography of the lawn and the proper distance from house to shed to nearby trees. You have to compensate for body length, leg height and amount of squat (which is a discipline itself) to calculate the proper drop placement. It's a long equation that he has to work out in his head each time as weather conditions, humidity, temperature and probability of precipitation also factor in.

At least I presume this is what's going through his mind. I'm pretty sure he's smarter than I am.
