Once you learn the harmonica you must learn....

that you're not supposed to play through the whole damn song. I love good harmonica playing but not overkill. Some players want to play from the start of the song to the finish. It's just like any other instrument in that you must know when "not" to play as well as when to play........

I used to play a lot but haven't in later years. I've worked up the straight 1st
position playing on Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" and others including "Mary Jane's Last Dance" by Tom Petty. There's a lot of good first position stuff out there, mainly all the Bob Dylan things and also Billy Joel's "Piano Man" has a good 1st position ride............

In the world of old Blues players, Jimmy Reed was a noted 1st position player. He could bend notes by blowing on them which is much harder than drawing or 2nd position harp....

I did a little 2nd position harp in the old days and worked up the parts on Roy Orbison's "Candy Man" and the Doobie Brother's "Long Train Running".... I don't remember what key of harp I used for that one though.........JH in VA.
