For me, my '70 Tele wore down to the wood at the edges of the fretboard, but no wear on the fretboard or back of the neck. And, the frets were worn down to nothing. Whatever poly Fender used in the 70s was pretty tough stuff. But, my fingernails don't get longer than my fingertips, so I presume that "extra padding" keeps the fretboard from wearing.
