The Fender-Boss FRV-1 reverb pedal is pretty cool. I've been happy with mine. It's got the same mix, dwell, and tone controls as a Fender outboard reverb unit. It's easy to get just the right amount of reverb to sweeten the sound and not be intrusive.
You could also try a new speaker for about the same price. There are so many options but in general I think an alnico speaker and/or a hemp cone would help reduce the brashness or ice-pick tones you describe. The original Deluxe Reverb didn't come with an alnico speaker back in the day but who cares.
