DRRI opinions, ideas?

so i have been fighting my tone with my DRRI. i play with a bit of reverb. somewhere like 5 give or take. but it has always been to shrill, ice picky. i try to balance it with my tone knob or the amps settings but it remains. so today i move over to channel one and find what i am looking for sound wise. i exploded! but now i am playing with no reverb so.... i read that changing reverb tubes might help or should i just keep it at channel 1 and buy a reverb pedal? these seem to be my two choices, maybe a new speaker. i cant afford a mod and lack the confidence to do one myself on this guy.

if it is tubes Do i just take out the old and put in the new? or do i have to understand biasing?
or... any suggestions on a good reverb pedal. i saw a "cathedral?" pedal that i think i could love.
thanx
