National Forest camping is your best bet. Be sure to research the amount of time you can stay in one spot. Many, many people live in the national forests out here in Colorado. You simply have to move around so that you aren't breaking the rules and pissing off the rangers. You'll have a great time.
I might add, the more remote you get, the less you'll be hassled by Rangers.
