Good to know I'm not imagining things. I have no frame of reference, really. This is my first walnut guitar (aside from the boy's) and my very first tele.
In the end, though, they both sound exactly like telecasters. :)
My belief for now (always subject to change) is that the overall design of the tele swamps everything else when it comes to sound.
While I haven't owned one before, I must have played a hundred different ones over the last year trying to pick one out. There are, of course, differences, but darn near every one I played was more telecaster than not. Some emphasized one thing or another, but it was all stuff around the edges. The "meat and potatos" were very similar on most.
