I agree with this. You can replace pickups, but if the neck is only so-so - only
almost doing it for you - you'll notice it all the time and it's half the guitar.
My CVC is kind of low output but when I put a tubescreamer in front of it I still get great overdrive sounds. On the other hand, my MIM (originally had hotter ceramics) got some great drive straight into the amp without pedals but I couldn't seem to tame the constant 60hz hum. It rocked for sure, but it didn't seem as versatile as the lower output pickups in my CVC.
