Beach Clean-Up

A few weeks ago, a huge global company that is based on Long Island contacted me wanting to do some sort of volunteer project for Earth Day/Month. We settle on a beach clean-up and then a tour of the Aquarium and our rescue facility. In turn, they made a very generous donation to our program.

In just 2 hours, we cleaned a 3/10 mile section of beach and removed over 250 pounds of trash. This was not a lot of big heavy items, these were the deadly little ones like balloons, streamers, fishing line/wire, nets, ropes, tampoon applicators, condoms, and thousands of bottle caps and other little bits of hard plastic. I purposely took them to a beach that at first looks rather pristine until you really start looking and then you see just how much plastic is mixed in with all the sand and seaweed.

Those bags are 30 gallons each and they are filled with every day items that can easily kill all sorts of marine life and sea birds. I had no idea what to expect from a corporate project like this, but these people had a work ethic that anyone would be proud of.
