Just a thought, this is what I am going to try anyway. How about tinting ultra blonde shellac with a little white tint and then slowely add the butterscotch color (amber, yellow, what ever - etc) until you find the right color combo for your likes. You could make this very transparent and spray as many coats as you would like until achieving the right look. Then if you want you could clear coat it with nitro, since pretty much anything can go over shellac?? I am goint to try this on a Pine tele I am building. It will take some trial and error to get the right tint shellac mix but since shellac is not toxic I think it would be a safe and perhaps easy way to get a opaque butterscotch effect without having to deal with nitro for the whole process. You could even just spray some un-tinted layers of untra blonde shellac as the clear and then level and polish, I have done this with other guitars and yes it is a bit less resistant to abuse than nitro, but not much.
