Sounds like that bandsaw might have had the wrong kind of blade on it, like a metal cutting blade or something. Or maybe there was something in that wood like a nail or shotgun slug. Wouldn't be the first time its happened to a member on this forum. You might want to sand those burnt sides down and see.
