Reasonable comments and good points. For proper bedding, however, even the thickness of the tape sort of diminishes the true effect. For a rifle action it wouldn't be acceptable, but on a guitar it might be. Agreed, and because I was using Brownell's release agent (which has a Windex-like color if I remember correctly), I used tape because I was afraid of the release agent discoloring the neck...and I figured the tape might provide a tiny bit of relief when removed, which it did, but it was still a super-tight fit. For anyone who prefers that, I think it's a good method to consider. It really does work.
And, I didn't know you could use shoe polish as a release agent - that would seem to eliminate any concerns about discoloring, and be cheaper to boot.
