I haven't run into anyone using one live yet, but I think they'll catch on once people get over the initial weirdness. In a live context, and when used through a traditional amp, I really doubt any inaccuracies or artifacts in the models would be very audible. I was present for an initial product demo by Line6 right before they were first released, and I have to say that the Variaxes are the coolest product made by that company, and truly stunning in their level of trickery. I'm sure eventually cover bands will eat 'em up, followed by original artists who want variety.
Not me, of course, I think they're the work of the devil, and should be purified by flame. :D
