For the same reasons as telest above: folds down to 18" for easy transport in my gig case. I've used mine for a couple of years now, and it's very sturdy. The vertical pole is height adjustable, AND the top is threaded to accept a gooseneck or boom attachment for a mic -- nice design feature. - CS
