I'm not a big DS-1 fan, so I can't speak to it directly, but have you checked out the forum?
Typically, BYOC kits contain many mods/options that a standard pedal doesn't.

But, yea, they're not the most "economical" option for a DIY pedal kit, but IMO, they are the best option for a newbie DIYer or someone who isn't into sourcing all of their own parts.
