I'm fairly sure I'm past the age for such things. My big influence in my late teens/early 20s was Hunter S. Thompson. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "The Great Shark Hunt" were the big ones.

I guess it IS a matter of time and place. I was stuck in the middle of Missouri in the Air Force and Thompson opened a window for me.

I also discovered Vonnegut around that same time. I thought he was great. Maybe some feel the same about him as I do about Kerouac.
