We'll, I'll admit, I have limited exposure to DG.....but what I have seen\heard, just wasnt my cup of tea. Doesnt mean he wasnt a great player, just not my taste.. I have a copy of an old "American Music Workshop" (is that what it was called??) on VHS. It was the one with Vince Gill where he had Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, .....DG's tone was the most shrill & lifeless tone I believe I have ever heard. When he would take a lead it literally sounded like a buzzsaw.....he was just all over the place & the biggest part of the playing just made no musical sense to me....In that particular video, Vince Gill outshined both DG & Albert Lee (man I hate his 70's strat tone nowadays)......HOWEVER, I was impressed with the video posted in this thread....now I can see why he has some loyal fans......
I can't cite the source, but remember reading somewhere that Danny was REAL mad about that American Music Workshop show. The story as I remember it is that he was told to just bring his guitar, they'd have an amp for him, which he was a little leery of. I think I remember that a previous show went long, or for some reason he had very limited time for rehearsal, and he was never able to satisfactorily dial-in a sound he liked on the amp. He said he played badly because of it, and suspected sabotage from someone - promoters, labels, etc - that he didn't 'play the game' with.

Not that that's a complete answer, or that I (or anyone) needs to make excuses... but we all have bad days, and shows we'd just as soon forget... I think that was one of Danny's 'wish I could do-it-over' shows...
