I should add that there are models available in other parts of the world that are not sold in the U.S. Some of those seem to have different serial-number systems, but if they're made in the Japan factory, I'll bet the quality is the same. Apparently Takamine has several distributorships, and they work somewhat independently somehow. Kaman Music, the Ovation maker, has been the U.S. distributor of Takamine guitars since the early '70s, and it is now a subsidiary of Fender.
