A 5K pot is actually a decent recommendation - I find that part of the range of the 10K isn't very usable, and at "max voice," it's a bit too bright.
2.2K in series with a 5K pot will give you most of the stock 10K/1K range. The other benefit is that at "max voice," you basically have the "2X gain" mod from a TS - a 2.2K resistor paired with a .1uF capacitor.
Keep in mind that if you stick with a higher value fixed resistor that you'll want to match that value on the gain pot.
