Yes! THAT's what I'm talking about.
Back when there was a more distinct handful of designs, it probably meant more. Now that the lines are blurred in many cases, it really doesn't matter so much.
And many guitarists don't care anyways.
A REALLY good pedal builder can actually (kind of) base their circuit on almost anything they want, if they have the prowess to shape it to their needs. The BJFE/Mad Professor pedals are a good example - many of the dirt boxes look like tweaked Rats under light examination, but none of them sound much like one.
...There was a DIY project that pretty much converted the Fuzz Face circuit into sounding like a Distortion+ (the runoffgroove.com Sili Face II) - tighter, less fizz and bass, etc. It was fun to build just for kicks, since a FF or D+ have the same low parts count!
