I recently became a Yamaha owner with this RGX121S. Only £70 on Ebay and I’m really pleased with it. According to Yamaha, the serial number dates it to 2001. Despite the name and appearance it’s closer to an HSH Strat than an Ibanez.
It’s definitely aimed at hard rock\metal users because the pickups are loud! I plan to replace the middle unit with a single coil sized blade humbucker because it’s a bit bland but the other two are good enough for now, especially the bridge.
The vintage type tremolo is almost identical in size to my 1962 Strat, I may replace it at some point because there’s only a thin alloy block and the arm wobbles (I fixed that with plumbers tape). I set the tremolo up as per Carl Verheyen’s method on Youtube, added graphite to the nut slots and the tuning is very stable. I plan to add some cheap locking tuners to make it even better.
The neck is really easy to play and very well made with immaculate frets. Similar in dimensions to my 62 but not so deep and with a very flat radius. The body on the ‘S’ versions is alder and played acoustically it’s louder and more resonant than my Strat!
Like a lot of people I ignored Yamaha’s in the past, but this guitar which only cost £200 originally has made me think again.
