Seriously--out of all the people I know who've had serious damage done to their guitars, only one was in hard case. All the others were soft cases, or guitars leaning against amps/couches.
Just the other night I was playing in a club, and beforehand our gear and the other act's were in the "performance corner" area. Three guitars together on the floor--mine in a hard case, my partner's in a hard case, and the other act's, in a black softcase. The soundguy walks by to do something and manages to kick the guitar in the softcase, probably because it's dark and in the back of his mind it's "cases on the floor--no need for extreme caution". Oof.
I know Ritchie Fiegler advocates the soft case, because then he knows he has to keep it near him, not in the trunk or sitting around the club. At some point though, you're going to set the thing down, and that's when the trouble starts. I never feel comfortable with a Gibson in a non-hard case.
