Hey Baard! Do the wrist & knee guard thing pretty quickly - a bicycle helmet wouldn't be a bad idea either. OK, not the coolest looking but if you fall, at least you're still able to play ... not to mention think, walk, eat, etc ... When you get to the new skate stage, look for something with Active Braking, sort of a lever arrangement on the back cuff of one of the skates. You stop by 'scissoring' your legs. Very easy and none of the instability associated with the toe drag / heel lift / hockey stop techniques. My .02
I used to love to 'blade when I lived in the flatlands, now that I'm in the mountains the opportunities are few and far between. Pretty much I have to go find a parking lot in one of the nearby towns otherwise it's a death ride! Aw well, the skiing is certainly better!
