Do you have access to Spar Varnish and/or Tung Oil?
My tele has a couple thin coats of tung oil on the neck and a mix of tung oil and spar varnish (a la this:
http://www.sutherlandwelles.com/marine.htm) on the body. Beautiful, tough, and the neck feels Just Right.
