Knopf and Chet don't use effects???

Since when do Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins not use effects? I've heard them both use them plenty of times. I understand you're trying to make the point that a great player shouldn't NEED them, but most great players that play electric have at least dabbled in them, a lot of great players that don't NEED them certainly exploit them to create a whole new expressive vocabulary (e.g. Hendrix, David Torn, Bill Frisell, Earl Hooker, John Abercrombie, David Lindley..etc) and many players who use them alot that aren't necessarily trying to get over as virtuoso guitar players per se, which is as valid a point as any. But if you're going to try to make an argument in favor of a luddite approach, don't be throwing in Knopf and Chet to bolster your argument because these guys are as open-minded and experimental as anyone.

The guy only asked a question about nice effects for under $100, as good a question as any (my vote goes for the Guyatone stuff - I'm a proud chorus, flanger, delay & envelope filter owner), I'm not sure where telling the guy not to use effects enters into this. How do you know he hasn't spent time with just his hands and his amp and is just looking to branch out? And this whole idea of a player who may sound great but is just "hiding" behind effects is a little weird - could you name an example of someone that's hiding behind their effects so I can try to draw a bead on this?
