exactly the point " the nut is, effectively out of the question" so the string hieght can be set and when the nut slot is cut to the correct spec [.020" +-.002] the string hieght should be correct at 12 in my case i try for .045" to .050" on the bass string at 12.
before the nut slots are cut to depth - just scored with string spacing slots
if the string hieght at 12 is set by raising / lowering the saddles while the string is depressed at fret 1 to .0X"
when the nut slot is cut to .020" +-.002 the string height = .045" to .050"
what is value of X?
its geometry which i cant really wrap my head round
