OpenG Capo4's build thread. Through the wormhole

Can't wait to get started.

This year I'm planning on:

Body:
3pc. Wormy Chestnut barnwood. 1/2" roundover and probably a belly cut too.

Neck:
Laminate of quatersawn Wormy Chestnut and Mesquite, with Wormy Chestnut used as a veneer on the front and back of the peghead. Mesquite fretboard 12" radius. "Aged" pearl dots. 1-3/4" nut width. Probably "soft V" profile with around 7/8" profile thickness at first fret. Bitterroot guitars truss rod.

Scale:
26-3/16" - its the same scale commonly used by banjos but it makes a great guitar scale.

Hardware:
2 underwound p90's
Gibson style 3 way switch
Hipshot open gear/locking/staggered post tuners
"Starcaster" style bridge (hardtail with rolled edges)
Electrosocket

Thats about it as far as whats planned. The Chestnut just rings like a bell when you tap on it, so it should have a great unplugged sound (not that it'll matter when plugged in, lol)

Wow, at least two Chestnut Teles in this years' challenge.

Glad to see you're in this year, Eric. Looking forward to seeing it come together. That long scale--not sure I could reach up to do cowboy chords with the headstock that far away but it'll look cool.

My 2 cents worth on finishing, based on the Labrocaster; If you're gonna lacquer it, stock up on blush eraser and plan to spend some quality time waiting for it to dry.

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan. Good luck. I want to see how that long scale turns out.

The long scale is only about 11/16" longer than standard Fender scale. When that comes down to the differences between each fret the jump is almost marginal. But is is 1-7/16" longer than a LP scale, so cowboy chords or boogie riffs might be a stretch for a Gibson player.

A longer scale = more or less twang? I know its only a little bit longer but what a cool idea.
Chestnut and Mesquite - Loving the alternate woods
Good Luck and use the Mesquite scraps for BBQ

Its more twang at the bridge, and more of a punchy, bell-like sound at the neck, from the 2 I've already built with it.

The last one I did was 2 P90's and the were something like 5.4k at the neck and 6.04k at the bridge.

The bridge P90 was a little underwound for my liking. Its a really "surf guitar" tone. I am thinking I'll keep the neck at something like 5.4k and wind the bridge to 6.5-7k to try to get a little thicker sound out of that position.

Spent today shuffling around my shop. My neighbor has mover and he gave me his workbench and a big section of pegboard. Now I have to make room for it.

But it'll have a lot of storage space underneath for my larger tools, and add a lot of work surface to the shop (aka another flat surface to colonize with clutter).

Brian, my usual set of strings are Ernie Ball "heavy bottom / slinky top".
.010
.013
.017
.030
.042
.052

Those do fine with standard tuning. The friend who I built one for previously uses some crazy "drop down tuning" strings for a more "Bass VI" sound. The bottom string on that set is something like .060 it has to have a step down in the winding to fit through the hole in the peg, like a bass string. Even then, it barely fits through.
