guitarbuilder's 2012 Challenge Build Thread -- COMPLETED

Now the big question is recyclables, pencils, or craftsticks?

Good luck!

I've had to do things differently since I was the 2nd born child in my family. Make my own path and fly my own flag so to speak...:-).

Has anyone made a tele out of styrofoam yet? If not, why not you?

Just sayin'. Looking forward to your build.

Thanks, I figured I'd better get in and can always bail if need be. I'm leaning toward the craftstick telecaster as it would be quite a challenge. I may go craftstick neck, cardboard and recyclables body though too. For some reason they both are stuck in my mental to -do list. I'd like to debunk the one piece body no glue joint myth. Ever since the pencil caster came up I've also been thinking pizza box body too.... I've also been saving a lot of plastic toothpaste caps for knobs...LOL.

1 1/2" insulation foam, glued on cardboard top, back and sides, a couple of wood blocks inlaid here and there. Very strong..................so I've heard

Ok, ok, it works for a canoe paddle , but who knows for what else?

I don't think so. Go for it. I remember seeing a torsion box table protruding out of a wall in FineWoodworking Mag about 20 years ago.

Back in the mid - 80's when IA changed to Technology Education, we used to have the kids make bridges out of 40-50 popsicle sticks and a couple basswood pieces of wood .25 x .25 by 24 inches long. You'd be amazed how much weight a bridge like that can hold up. I am pretty confident a craft stick guitar can hold its own.

I remember that. We have a science museum in OKC that hosted a competition, and like you said, I was utterly amazed at how much weight one of those bridges could handle.

We used to load them with barbell weights hanging down from the middle. A few had held up one of our larger teachers 300+ pounds, and a couple even more barbell weights that he held in his hands....When they let go though...they sent sticks everywhere....LOL... it was kinda fun to watch.... safety glasses were a must.

Isn't a hollow-body kind of a torsion box anyway?

Lots of great ideas here! I had my heart set on somebody making a Pencilcaster though. Maybe next year. or. . . hmmmm. . . .

The torsion box, as I know it, is a bunch of lap jointed pieces all in a grid configuration, on edge, glued between skins of hardwood or plywood..
